Our View of the Midterm Election

When comparing competing candidates in the upcoming election, most of us agree that we need representatives who will shift our government away from mainly serving the interests of the wealthy and toward improving the lives of hard-working average Americans.

Trump promised to do this, but he turned out to be just a big talker.  He immediately started cutting deals with billionaires while enriching himself at our expense.   He also dramatically increased the cost of living with foolhardy tariffs and a senseless and ruinous war.  Meanwhile, his administration has been actively hostile to the concerns of workers.

At present, Trump is subject to only the most minimal checks and balances even as he abuses and depletes our military power, reinvents the law to suit himself, and worsens the lives of ordinary Americans, all while enriching the wealthy and lining his own pockets.  Granting this much power to one individual is the opposite of a healthy democracy – if anything, it moves us even further away from our goal of making our government responsive to regular citizens.

The one stop-gap we can unite behind this November is to refuse to vote for any candidate who follows the megalomaniacal lead of Donald Trump.  No matter how people may feel about Democrats, our immediate goal should be to give Congress a chance to apply the brakes while the rest of us work to wrest future control of our democracy from the large corporations and wealthy individuals who are still calling the shots.

The bottom line is this: we all know that MAGA politicians’ true loyalty is not to voters but to Trump.  And we all know now that Trump cares far more about his own glorification than about any of us.  This should make our voting decisions very easy.
