California Governor (June 2, 2026)

Summary:

Neither Indivisible Santa Cruz County (ISCC) nor our team is officially endorsing a candidate. Our biggest concern is that California’s “jungle primary” creates the possibility of a pathological outcome in which the two Republican candidates are the only options on the November ballot. Our top priority is to avoid this by supporting a Democrat who is polling competitively. Our longer-term priority is for California to adopt some form of ranked-choice voting so that the electoral outcome will better reflect the voters’ preferences.

Background:

It currently appears that good arguments can be made for either of the two top-polling Democrats: Tom Steyer and Xavier Becerra. Given that Steyer and Becerra are polling neck and neck, we could conceivably endorse Steyer because his positions align well with our pro-democracy agenda and that of the Patriotic Millionaires. However, an argument can also be made for Becerra’s superior experience.
